Canyoning the Rio Damajagua - 27 Waterfalls
By Harley McAllister
After 4 years exploring this island, this has easily become
one of our families favorite activities in the Dominican Republic. You may be disappointed at first to learn
that not all of the 27 waterfalls are jump worthy, but
don't let that worry you because this canyoning experience is packed with fun. Plus, the fact that this beautiful spot is just
off one of the best highways in the country - Route 5 connecting Santiago to
Puerto Plata, is a huge bonus.
In our mountain home of Jarabacoa there are many undeveloped rivers that one can canyon/hike to, and a few developed ones. But none of them are done as well and as professionally as this one. And frankly, none can really compare. This small stream cascades delightfully over limestone rocks, through narrow chutes, and over large boulders that beg for a good jump. The start of this expedition begins with a choice. You can hike through the forest to the 'top' of the river and come down all 27 waterfalls, or you can start at the bottom and canyon your way upstream through the lower 12 waterfalls - you can't come up all 27 because it would take too long. We have done both, and each has its good points. But I seem to prefer getting the hard work out of the way up front and then letting gravity be the key to the adrenaline on the way down. |
As you can see in the photos above, the scenery of the 27 Waterfalls canyon is stunning. The water runs an aquamarine blue, and the limestone walls have a wide pallet of colors in addition to stalagmites in a few locations. Over all of this exists a canopy of rainforest trees and vines that make for a magical experience.
But really, what people come for is the adventure! This small stream tumbles its way down the mountain in a series of jumps, pools, slides, and slot canyons. Some of the 27 Waterfalls are only a foot or two in height, while others stretch as high as 25 feet (with an alternate, easier route.

In the final analysis, still pictures just don't do this adventure justice, because this trip is all about the action! So instead of pictures, here is a link to a 4 minute video showing the best cliff jumps, natural water slides, deep pools, and amazing scenery. Enjoy!
