Liberty Lake Regional Park-Great trails and geocaches!

Oh, spring is in the air!  When the days are getting longer and the ground is warming from the added sunlight, the bulbs and flowers can’t stand to stay underground and neither can we!  On a recent gorgeous spring day I took our 4 boys out for a hike in Liberty Lake Regional Park.  We brought along the GPS so we could do a bit of geocaching while we hiked.  Before heading out we stopped at the dollar store to pick up a few small goodies to leave in any caches we might find.  Once the boys had chosen their items they couldn’t wait to get going.

We parked and began looking for the first cache immediately.  It was near the playground so baby had something to do while he waited for his brothers to find and sign in on the cache.  Then we loaded baby up and hit the trail.

This cache is our smallest find yet!

We quickly came upon a boardwalk that took us out into the marshy delta above Liberty Lake.  The boys had a good laugh when a snake surprised me as it slithered off the boardwalk and into the marsh grass.  We saw lots of birds including geese and red-winged blackbirds. (See leading photo)
Continuing on we passed the small campground and then hit the true trail.  It is a wide meandering path through areas of shade and sun that is delightful for all ages.  We let baby down to walk quite a bit as there was negligible elevation gain.  We found another cache and stopped to read some interpretive signs about beaver activity in the area.  The boys really enjoyed looking at the beaver dams and houses and asked lots of really good questions, most of which I could answer without Google!

Eventually we came to a fork in the trail.  Due to the fact that our GPS was indicating that the last two caches I had downloaded were to the right, we went right.  The trail becomes more wooded, reminding me of hikes on Mt. Spokane, and it also travels up and down a lot more.  We ended up by a wood wall and a rope swing.  We hung out here for a bit while the boys played, I lay in the sun, and we found another cache.

Moving on we searched for and found the last cache.  From our vantage we could see that we were on the other side of the marshy delta.  By now we had been out for about 2 hours so we decided to head home.  Once back at the car, everyone agreed that we had a marvelous time. The boys are excited to return and explore the many more miles of trails on mountain bikes next time.  Five thumbs up for Liberty Lake Regional Park!
