Rafting season is upon us again in the inland Northwest and our family has been itching to get on the river. We did fit in an afternoon rafting on the Spokane river a few weeks ago but our real love is the multi-day trip. For our first multi-day trip of 2015 we decided to visit the first river we did as a family, way back when the kids were all small-the Grande Ronde River in Oregon. |
By Abby McAllister Although not known for big white water excitement, the Grande Ronde is great for many other reasons. It is available by self-issue permit meaning you don't have to put your name in a lottery and hope you draw a permit. It is doable in a weekend. The wildlife is truly unmatched. And this year we chose it because it is a great starting ground for new boaters and this year we have 3 "new" boaters: this was baby's first trip, our oldest rowed his own boat for the first time and our second son paddled an IK (inflatable kayak) for the first time! We were some proud parents this weekend! Above you see some general photos of the fun we had on the water and in camp. Below are some of the wildlife photos. We saw Bighorn Sheep, Mountain goats, a beaver, multiple Bald Eagles (chasing geese, dragging big fish and hanging out), small snakes, geese, lots of butterflies and what was either an immature Golden Eagle or more likely, an immature Bald Eagle. If you think your family might enjoy getting into some whitewater rafting, check out our "how to" article on rafting with kids from the menu at the top!
