Capitol Reef National Park
Family Vacation

What exactly is a "Capitol Reef?"  It turns out that one of the many amazing features at this park closely resembles a stone version of our nations capitol.  And the overall formation is a long, thin range of rock that creates a reef of mountains nearly impassable to the early settlers, much like a coral reef is impassable to sailing vessels.  But whatever you call it, this place has incredible and colorful rock formations where it seems you can see the erosion happening in real time.  It is also unique in that much of the human history here has been preserved, including ancient rock art and the pioneer buildings.  But the best preservation is the still functioning orchard where visitors can pick fruit in the fall harvest season, and the on-site shop where they sell some of the most delicious fruit pies you have ever sunk your teeth into.  Capitol Reef National Park is located in the region between the eastern and western parks in UT, so if you plan right it is easy to fit this into your itinerary for a day of two of awesomeness. Make it happen!
